I’ll never forget when I was off the coast of South Africa, swimming about a quarter of a mile out at sea. It was very difficult, fighting through the waves in order to get out to calmer waters. The winds were strong and the waves were enormous. If you didn’t navigate a wave properly, you were helplessly pounded into the surf.
When I began creating the story of “Shamoo—A Whale of a Cow”, I often reflected on those days of swimming in the deep blue, realizing you can easily be in over your head before you know it. Of course, with Shamoo, he was lucky enough to be saved by a really cool humpback. As for me, well, I just keep catching more and more mouthfuls of saltwater.
Ah, to be a cow!
